Junior high school students (11-14 years
old) from Israel and Jewish schools all over the world are invited
to take part in the tenth My Family's Story - The Professor
Y. Halbrecht International Family Tree Competition.
The contest is organized by the International School for Jewish Peoplehood Studies at Beth Hatefutsoth -
The Nahum Goldmann Museum of the Jewish Diaspora in Tel Aviv, with the collaboration of the Division of
Israel-Diaspora Educational Relations Department of the Israeli Ministry of Education.
The goal of the competition is to encourage students to research
their families in depth, and to provide them with the opportunity
to add their own families to the database of the Douglas E.
Goldman Jewish Genealogy Center. This important information
will be preserved for future generations and will help find
links with other families.
Registration
to download the registration form for the competition.
- Participation fee is US $100.00 per school regardless
of how many students participate.
Every participating school will
receive
- Instructions either by mail, e-mail, fax and phone during
the entire period of the competition.
- 2. Access to a Jewish genealogy software program enabling
the construction of the family tree and its subsequent registration
in the database of the Douglas E. Goldman Jewish Genealogy Center.
The Competition
- Every student will prepare a "roots project" documenting
his/her family.
- Every student will prepare his/her family tree.
- In schools where Hebrew is taught, students are recommended
to include a page in Hebrew, with content to be chosen by
them; e.g. a letter, an interview, some poetry, etc.
- Ideally students should include in the summary of their
work a few words describing what they feel they may have
gained whilst working on their project.
- All family trees will be sent to the Douglas E. Goldman
Jewish Genealogy Center.
There will be two stages of judging
First stage
- In every class the teachers will select the best "roots
project".
- Each school will then send one "roots project" for each
class
- All work submitted must reach Beth Hatefutsoth by April
30, 2006
The second stage
- All works sent to Beth Hatefutsoth will be evaluated
by a jury of representatives from the Israel Ministry of
Education, The Constantiner Family School of Education of
Tel Aviv University, The Douglas E. Goldman Jewish Genealogy
Center and the Education Department of Beth Hatefutsoth.
- Prizes will be awarded for the three best works from
Israel and the three best from Diaspora communities.
