applications should send their family trees in a GEDCOM 5.5 format file.
How to create a GEDCOM file with the help of DoroTree – the premium
application for Jewish Genealogy recommended by Beth Hatefutsoth
To submit your family tree to the Douglas E. Goldman Jewish Genealogy Center
at Beth Hatefutsoth you need to save your data in a GEDCOM file of ALL
INDIVIDUALS in your family tree.
GEDCOM (Genealogy Data Communication) is a file format used to exchange data
between genealogy programs. DoroTree can import and export GEDCOM data from
other programs. As the Hebrew in DoroTree is not part of the GEDCOM
standard, it may get lost when importing DoroTree generated GEDCOM files to
other programs. DoroTree is trying to import Hebrew fields from other GEDCOM
files, which include Hebrew data. This is done by using the "Special Import"
feature in the File | GEDCOM menu.
IMPORTANT: when submitting your family tree to the Douglas E. Goldman Jewish
Genealogy Center make sure that all relevant data is entered in Roman
characters; data in Hebrew characters would not be recognized. Before
running the export, DoroTree will show you the GEDCOM Options dialog box,
where you can choose between exporting all fields or non-Hebrew fields only
or between exporting all persons in your database or only all direct
descendants (including spouses) from a certain ancestor (the current
person). Default is all fields and all persons.
To export GEDCOM data from the currently open family tree, just follow the
instructions:
-
Select the GEDCOM export from the File menu of your DoroTree software
program. A dialog box will be displayed for you to specify the GEDCOM
file. Save your GEDCOM file after naming it and making sure you remember
its location on your hard disk.

-
Click on SAVE. A second dialog box will be displayed for you to specify
the desired format of the GEDCOM file: Select export to OTHER and export
ALL to include all individuals in your family tree.

-
Click on Submitter. A third dialog box will be displayed. Make
sure you fill out ALL Latin and Communication fields, then click ob
SAVE. You will be returned to the second dialog box.

-
Click on SAVE button on the second dialog box. Your GEDCOM file will be
created immediately and a final dialog box will be opened with a
confirmation.

-
Click OK to return to your family tree. The GEDCOM file you have just
created should be send as an attachment to your e-mail message.

GEDCOM 5.5 - will export source records using 5.5 style pointers.
This is the cleanest export and the one you must choose in order to
submit your family tree with the Douglas E. Goldman Jewish Genealogy
Center at Beth Hatefutsoth.
-
pre-GEDCOM 5.5 - will export source records imbedded in the record.
This can result in duplicate source data when the file is imported into
another program. However, most programs understand this format.

- Click on Start Export. A message
log will be displayed. If there are problems or data converted
incorrectly, then you can correct them and retry the export. All fields
in the database are exported. If the field is not part of the GEDCOM
specifications, then it is exported as part of a GEDCOM note.
- When the export is complete, you can
continue using your database.
