Born in Kurdistan,
Asenath (Hebrew: Asnat) received her education from her father,
Samuel Barazani, himself a distinguished scholar and considered a
saint by many Jews of Kurdistan. Following her husband’s death,
Asenath became Head of the Mosul yeshiva (now in Iraq). Regarded as
a sage of Torah learning and an expert in Jewish studies, she was
respectably called tannait - “Lady Tanna”, in recognition of her
outstanding knowledge of the Talmud. A revered teacher and community
leader she is thought to have composed a commentary on the “Book of
Proverbs”.
