Born in Ivancice, he taught musicology at Vienna University from 1881 (professor 1898) and is regarded as one of the founders of modern musicology. He founded and edited a leading musicological quarterly from 1884 to 1894. Thanks to him Vienna was one of the great centers of musicological research. Adler was honorary president of the International Society of Musicology, which he helped to establish.
