Born in Lida, Belarus (then
in the Russian Empire) he was in Germany from 1883 to 1886
when he went to the US. He founded the first modern
Hebrew-German school in the US. in Boston. From 1898
Blaustein was superintendent of the Educational Alliance of
New York, which at that time was the major body for the
integration of immigrants. He worked to raise the standing
of social workers and in 1905 became the first president of
the Society of Jewish Social Workers of New York. An active
Zionist, Blaustein was the first president of Bnei Zion.
From 1908 he directed the Chicago Hebrew Institute and from
1910 was professor at the New York School for Philanthropy.
