Born in Minden, Germany, son of a merchant, he studied at
German universities. A field trip to study the Eskimos in
Baffin Island, Canada, to further his geographical work led
him to specialize in the anthropology of North America. In
1887 he settled in the US, teaching at Clark University. In
1899 he was appointed professor of anthropology at Columbia
University and in 1901 curator of the American Museum of
Natural History. He also edited the
Journal of American
Folklore and founded
The International Journal of
American Linguistics. His chief contribution was his
painstaking method of describing the culture and language of
unfamiliar societies and he was regarded as the father of
American anthropology. In his latter years he lent the full
force of his scientific authority to the campaign against
Nazi racism.
