Georg Brandes (orig. Morris Cohen)
(1842-1927), literary critic.

He studied literature and philosophy at the University of Copenhagen. In 1871 he gave a series of lectures which introduced the concept of realism to Danish literature. A friend of Ibsen, they regarded themselves as allies in the struggle against cultural provincialism. Regarded as an 'atheist Jew', he was denied a professorship in Copenhagen and lived in Berlin, Germany, from 1877 to 1882. Returning to Denmark, whose society had become more open, he was appointed professor of aesthetics at the University of Copenhagen in 1902. Brandes had a great influence on Danish culture and his collected works appeared in Danish and German.
