Born into a leading
Modena family, in Italy, he settled in Paris after World War I.
During the German occupation in World War II he found refuge in
Italian-occupied France where, working with a Catholic priest, he
was instrumental in rescuing Jews. Through his negotiations after
the fall of Mussolini thousands of Jews were saved. Donati himself
escaped to Switzerland from where he continued his rescue work. He
died in Paris.
