He was born in Olkusz
where his father was rabbi and he married a daughter of the Court
Jew, Samson Wertheimer. At the age of 18 he was appointed rabbi of
Kromeriz and then of Mainz, Germany, before settling in Vienna,
Austria, as court purveyor, supplying arms and other commodities to
the authorities. Eskeles succeeded his father as chief rabbi of
Moravia and in 1725 succeeded his father-in-law as chief rabbi of
Hungary, working out of Vienna. He fought against attempts to expel
Jews from Moravia and Austria. Shortly before his death, he
established a foundation for giving religious education to children
and providing poor brides with a dowry.
