Wilhelm Freund
(1806-1894), philologist

Born in Kempen, then in Germany, he was a Greek and Latin scholar and until age 50 his main occupation was compiling dictionaries and aids to the study of the ancient classics. From 1855 to 1870 he directed the Jewish high school in Gleiwitz (now Gliwice, in Poland). Freund was the author of many educational pamphlets and edited the periodical Zur Judenfrage in Deutschland (1843-44).
