Shelomo Ben-Yosef
(
Shulim Tabachnik; 1913-1938), Betar activist

He was born in Luck, Poland (now in the Ukraine) and. joined Betar, the Revisionist youth movement, at an early age. He immigrated to Palestine illegally in 1937 and worked with a Betar labor group in Rosh Pinnah. In April 1938 Ben-Yosef and two of his comrades, outraged by Arab terror attacks, made a retaliatory attack on an Arab bus on the Rosh Pinnah-Safed road. The attack failed and the three were arrested and tried before a British military court. Though none was hurt, Ben-Shlomo and one of his comrades were sentenced to death. His comrade's sentence was commuted to life imprisonment but Ben-Yosef was executed despite worldwide protests and appeals.
