Lea Goldberg
(1911-1970), poet.

She was born in Königsberg, East Prussia, (today Kaliningrad in Russia) and spent her early childhood in Russia but after the 1917 Revolution her family returned to their home in Kovno, Lithuania. She began to publish Hebrew verse while still a schoolgirl. Goldberg attended first the University of Kovno, and then the Berlin University (where she earned a doctorate in Semitic studies) and the University of Bonn. In 1935 she settled in Tel Aviv and joined the modernist group whose mentor was Avraham Shlonsky. She joined the staffs of the newspapers, Haaretz and Davar and became children books' editor of Sifriyyat ha-Poalim and was literary editor to the Habima theater and the Al Ha-Mishmar journal. In 1952 Goldberg was appointed first professor of comparative literature at the Hebrew University. Her writings include lyrical poetry, literary criticism, books for children, and translations of European classics into Hebrew.
