Shlomo Taitz, The Ezra Synagogue, Cairo, Egypt 1994

The Ezra Synagogue in Fustat (old Cairo), became known over the years as the Ben Ezra Synagogue. One of the many traditions relating to this synagogue is that the Torah manuscript written by Ezra the Scribe was found there. Some believe it was originally built as a church in the 6th century, and was converted into a synagogue in 882. For hundreds of years it was the largest Jewish center in Fustat. Between 1889 and 1890 the synagogue underwent extensive renovations, and it was then that the famous Geniza was found, bringing the synagogue world-wide recognition.
