In the ma'alama (the Yemenite heder), boys learn to read in the Torah, and receive an elementary education from the mari (teacher). By the time the boys reach the age of three or four they are sent to the heder, where learning is according to each boy's ability. In the small villages the father himself often fulfills the role of mari.
