Micha Bar-Am, Hara Kabira, Djerba,
Tunisia 1995
The Jews of Djerba live in two settlements - Hara Kabira (the large
quarter) and Hara Zaghira (the small quarter). Until 1946, the Jewish
community of Djerba numbered some 4,200 souls. With the establishment of the
State of Israel in 1948, most of the community emigrated, and Muslims came
to live in the quarter. Today, about 800 Jews remain on the island, most of
whom live in the large quarter. As in many regions of Tunisia, the houses in
the quarter are painted a dazzling white, and the frames of the windows and
the doors are light blue.
