Alex Levac, Government Officials at the Bet El Synagogue, Yom Kippur,
Casablanca, Morocco 1994
The High Holidays service at the central synagogue in Casablanca presents
the Moroccan Government with an opportunity to pay tribute to the Jewish
community, and to demonstrate its policy of protection towards the Jewish
minority. Out of the 5,000 or so Jews in Morocco today, about 4,500 live in
Casablanca, with most of the lower- and the middle-class members of the
community living in the vicinity of the Bet El Synagogue in the city center.
