Frits Meyst, The Closed Jewish Market, Koysinjag,
Iraqi Kurdistan 1994
"The market has remained locked up and untouched since the Jews left here
in 1951," says Abdul Haji Rahman, whose son and daughter live in Israel.
Abdul Haji Rahman, one of the elders of Koysinjag, became Hajj after he had
been to Mecca. In 1951, he helped Kurdish Jews to reach Baghdad from where
they were airlifted to Israel. Among those who left were his son and
daughter. There are now plans to open a restaurant in the deserted market,
which was once a place of bustling activity.
