Micha Bar-Am, The R. Hizkia Synagogue, Djerba,
Tunisia 1995
The synagogue, located in Hara Kabira (the large quarter), is named after
R. Hizkia, son of R. Aaron Peretz, head of the Jewish community of Djerba in
the 18th century. It is built in the architectural style typical of Djerba,
which subsequently spread to other places. It includes an open columned
courtyard and an enclosed prayer hall, similar in structure to the
courtyard. In the raised area above the teva (reader's platform) twelve
upper windows - the number of the tribes of Israel - are set. The walls of
the interior are covered with ceramic tiles decorated with rich geometric
designs.
