Joseph Shahata, who has served in this synagogue for many years, met the first Israeli visitors who arrived in Egypt in 1979, following the Peace Treaty. The Ezra Synagogue, the most renowned among the synagogues of Fustat, underwent extensive renovations in recent years, and was officially reopened in 1995.
