About the Exhibition

Jews in Arab Lands Today "Jews in Arab Lands Today" is an exhibition of the work of six noted photographers: Micha Bar Am, Shlomo Taitz, Alex Levac, Robert Lyons, Frits Meyst and Zion Ozeri. They have recorded the life of Jewish communities in Arab Lands today from their personal viewpoints, expressing their various photographic and artistic approaches to photo-documentation.

The on-line exhibition consists of 21 photographs recently taken in Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Yemen, Syria and Iraqi Kurdistan, which focus on the one hand on the human aspect, and on the other, on Jewish sites, particularly Synagogues.

Below the sequence of images, which are displayed in a horizontal pattern, you will find an "Information Center", in which additional background information about the photographs is provided. You can choose to get information About the Photographers, about the Photographer's Impressions from the different countries they visited, or can decide to listen to authentic Music pieces from the countries represented in the exhibition. The Map of the Exhibition will give you a general view of the layout of the images according to artists and countries.

The concept of the virtual exhibition is based on the comprehensive exhibition "Jews in Arab Lands Today - Photographs", which was displayed at Beth Hatefutsoth, Tel Aviv, March 14-October 5, 1996. The original exhibition displayed 120 photographs by the six photographers represented in the virtual exhibition as well as two installations by two artists: Michal Heiman and Buky Schwartz. A multimedia information center on Jewish communities in Arab lands supplemented the exhibition. The original exhibition was curated by Ruth Porter and designed by Rachel Lev.
