Documentation of German and Austrian
Synagogues destroyed by the Nazis
During the state sponsored pogrom of November 9th, 1938, also known
as Kristallnacht, the Nazis destroyed, desecrated or closed more than
2,000 synagogues in Germany and Austria. Synagogen-Internet Archiv is a
web site dedicated to the documentation of the destroyed synagogues of Germany
and Austria. Developed by Marc Grellert of the CAD in Architecture program at
Darmstadt Technical University, Germany, this site offers the visitors an
interactive database about more than 2,000 synagogues in Germany and Austria. In
addition to basic information about the location of the synagogues and their
history, the site includes visual documentation of the synagogues, eyewitnesses’
reports, bibliography, links, and comments, whenever available.
Visitors are encouraged to contribute their comments,
testimonies, images, and links by filling out the information online.
The site is bilingual and the information may be added in
either German or English.
