A Kaddish for the Wooden Synagogues of Lithuania”
19 May 2013
The Seimas (Parliament) of the Republic of Lithuania has resolved to declare the year 2013 as the Year of Remembrance of the Vilnius Ghetto. The Lithuanian Government has approved a program of the Vilnius Ghetto Memorial year. This program consists of 50 events including a congress of Litvaks from around the globe, a solemn tribute ceremony, memorial and cultural events.
On Sunday, May 19, the exhibition “A Kaddish for the Wooden Synagogues of Lithuania”, created by the Jakovas Bunka Charity and Sponsorship Fund was opened in Beit Hatfutsot. The exhibition displays photographs of Lithuanian wooden synagogues. This beautiful and haunting exhibition is dedicated to remembering the once vibrant network of wooden synagogues that existed all over Lithuania before World War II.
Mr. Daumantas Levas Todesas, chair of the Jakovas Bunka Charity and Sponsorship Fund said "at present, there are 17 or 18 surviving buildings; four of them are houses of prayer. However, the state of all the synagogues is critical and our aim is to join our efforts to save them".
On display until June 3 in Gallery 1.
