Born in Hollerich,
Luxembourg, he spent most of his life in Paris, France. During 1883-1886 he was
professor of probability and mathematical physics at the Sorbonne and from 1886
professor of experimental science and director of the Sorbonne's research
laboratories. Lippmann did much basic work in classical physics and made
original contributions in a number of fields. In 1891 he produced color
photographs based on the phenomenon of interference for which he was awarded the
Nobel Prize in Physics in 1908. In 1886 he was elected to the
Académie des Sciences of which he became president in 1912.
