Barbra Streisand - a private visit to BH
A Private Visit of Barbra Streisand at Beit Hatfutsot, The Museum of the Jewish People
Irina Nevzlin Kogan Chair of the Board of Directors of Beit Hatfutsot hosted the Singer Wednesday June 19, 2013
After an emotional evening celebrating President Shimon Peres 90th Birthday and before her grand concert in Tel Aviv, Barbra Streisand, accompanied by her husband the actor James Brolin, arrived at Beit Hatfutsot on Wednesday June 19th for a private visit and was greeted by Irina Nevzlin Kogan Chair of the Board of Directors of Beit Hatfutsot and Dan Tadmor the CEO of the museum. This was Streisand's second visit at the museum that tells the unique and ongoing story of the Jewish People. The first visit was in 1984.
The visit included a tour of Beit Hatfutsot's exhibitions and a presentation of her personal family roots, prepared by the Genealogy center of Beit Hatfutsot, and delivered by Haim Ghiuzeli, director of Beit Hatfutsot databases – which was very emotional for Ms.Streisand. Streisand's family on her father's side is from Galicia and her grandfather Isaac, immigrated to America in the mid-19th century.
Particularly moved by the data base available to all visitors to Beit Hatfutsot, Streisand commented that the center of researching Jewish roots is rightfully centered in this “significant Jewish institution”. Evidently impressed by the tour and the museum’s exhibitions, Streisand commented “Visiting the museum made me realize we are all part of the story”.
During the tour Ms.Streisand received a thorough explanation of her family’s origins; the name Streisand appears in the beginning of the 19th century in the town of Bzerzany in eastern Galicia, under the Austrian rule at the time. Streisand literally means ‘scatter sand’ in German. This is a family name unique only to the family’s town of origin. Ms.Streisand’s grandfather on her mother’s side was a cantor and her mother was accepted to the NY Metropolitan choir so it is evident where Barbra Streisand received her impressive vocal abilities.
CEO Dan Tadmor shared the plans for the renewal of the museum and invited Ms. Streisand to visit the museum again in December 2016 for the grand opening of what seemingly will be the world’s single largest museum of the Jewish people.
