Mojito and Salsa - Cuba Exhibition Opening
Opening event of the exhibition “An Island Within an Island: a Look at the Jews of Cuba”
More than 300 guests attended the opening event at Beit Hatfutsot of the exhibition “An Island Within an Island – a Look at the Jews of Cuba”, which portrays the story of an insular Jewish community.
Cuba, an island stuck in a time warp, home to a small community whose fate has been tied to that of Cuba, but which nonetheless managed to maintain its Judaism.
The exhibition was commissioned by JDOCU, a group of amateur photographers, most of who are involved in high-tech, who took upon themselves to record Jewish communities throughout the world with the aim of encouraging philanthropy. During the course of the exhibition at Beit Hatfutsot, photographs will be sold and the proceeds transferred to the Jewish community in Cuba.
Amateur photographers whose work is displayed at the exhibition include: Yossi Beinart (CEO at the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange), Benny Levin (co-founder NICE Systems), Eliezer Yaari (Executive Chairman of give2gether Inc.), Attorney Amir Halevy, Itzik Goren (former IDF senior), CPA Tali Idan, entrepreneurs Shai Bayles, Nir Dagan and more. Curator of the exhibition is photographer Eli Atias who took part at this documenting journey.
Eliezer Yaari stated in his opening remarks that the exhibition’s goal it twofolded – the first is to tell the story of the Jewish community in Cuba and the second is to raise money for it. “Tonight we sold photographs displayed at the exhibition”, said Yaari, “and the funds will be transferred to Cuba. There is a shift in roles – now it is the Israelis who support the Jewish community over the ocean”.
In 2012, in a similar format, during an exhibition at Beit Hatfutsot, over $30,000 were raised in 2012 for the Jewish community in Georgia.
A moving moment was when the performer of the “Bilongi” band who was entertaining the guests with typical Cuban music, broker in tears when coincidently recognized a family member in one of the photos on display. She had left Cuba 13 years ago and has not been back there since.
Amongst the attending guests were Arnon Mantver (Director of JDC Israel), Talya and Gad Ze’evi, Raya Strauss and Shmuel Ben Dror, Galia Albin, Hanna Pri Zan, Nurit and Yoav Manor, Eti and Gad Proper.
The guests enjoyed Cuban music, salsa dancing, free flowing wine and mojitos.
