The General Planning Stage of the renewal plan has been completed, and Beit Hatfutsot is set to embark on the detailed planning stage.
The Beit Hatfutsot Renewal Program began with small but significant incremental steps. In 2007, a new database system was inaugurated to upgrade the massive world-renowned databases of Jewish genealogy, communities, family names, visual documentation, films and music. In 2008 the 3,800 square meters lobby level was opened, which includes three exhibition halls, two auditoriums, the Multi-Media Center, a café, the museum shop and a large lobby area. In February 2009, the planning process of the core exhibition of the new Museum of the Jewish People began. The new museum will offer an experiential visitor experience utilizing a variety of museum components and elements that complement each other and with clear circulation between them. The new museum will replace the existing permanent exhibition and will cover 4,200 square meters spread over three floors.
The implementation phase of the new museum is set to begin in approximately a year and a half. During construction, the permanent exhibition at Beit Hatfutsot will be closed to the public. The Center for Jewish Culture and Arts will remain open with many additional attractions and programs. The new museum is expected to open by early 2014.
