Documentation of Jewish Life in Switzerland

02.03.2011

Beit Hatfutsot recently received a generous grant from the Dr. Georg & Josi Guggenheim Foundation to create a visual documentation of Jewish life in Switzerland. This generous grant will allow the Bernard H. and Miriam Oster Visual Documentation Center to develop a comprehensive visual documentation of Jewish institutions currently active in Switzerland including: synagogues, community centers, educational and cultural institutions, memorials and historic buildings.

The project will also include a collection of visual material from private family albums depicting daily life in local Swiss Jewish communities throughout the 20th century. Particular emphasis will be placed on materials which visually document Jewish refugees in Switzerland during World War II.

The systematic, visual documentation of Jewish communal life in Switzerland is an integral component to Beit Hatfutsot's mission as "the National Center for Jewish communities in Israel and around the World." In 2005, the Knesset delegated this mission to the Museum upon passing the Beit Hatfutsot Law. The support of the Dr. Georg & Josi Guggenheim Foundation thus serves the twofold purpose of ensuring the documentation of Jewish life in Switzerland and contributing to the overall mission of Beit Hatfutsot as the Museum of the Jewish People.
