A. B. Yehoshua Addresses Conference Marking Holocaust Martyrs and Memorial Day
To mark Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Martyrs and Memorial Day, a two-day conference was held at Beit Hatfutsot on May 2-3, 2011. Entitled '70 Years Since the Beginning of the Genocide,'the conference was held under the auspices of the Chair for the Study of Anti-Semitism and Racism of Tel Aviv University, headed by Professor Dina Porat, in conjunction with the Stephen Roth Institute of the Study of Anti-Semitism and Racism, graciously sponsored by Dr. Felix and Ruta Zandman.
At this well attended gathering many aspects of the Shoah were discussed, generating tremendous interest and discussion. Dean of Tel Aviv University, Professor Aharon Shai, opened the conference and Mr, Moti Schwartz, Vice President of Beit Hatfutsot, welcomed the conference guests.
Study sessions were led by several distinguished scholars and intellectuals including Professor Shula Volkoff, from Tel Aviv University, authors Amir Gotroind and Nir Baram as well as renowned poet Ya'akov Barzilai. In addition, the President of the International Organization for Jewish Lawyers and Lawmakers, Irit Kahan participated, as well as the honorable Judge Menachem Finkelstein, Israel’s Military Advocate General, and Professor Emeritus of Tel Aviv University Yoram Dinstein, a specialist on international law and an authority on the laws of war. Other interesting lectures were delivered by leading teachers in the field of Holocaust Studies. A notable highlight of the conference were the touching and thought-provoking remarks by the renowned and eloquent novelist, essayist, and playwright, the esteemed A. B. Yehoshua.
