Compositions for Cello and Piano by Joachim Stutschewsky

Emanuel Gruber, cello; Michael Boguslavsky, piano BTR 9202 (CD & MC)

Joachim Stutschewsky (1891-1982) was born in Romni, Ukraine to a family of traditional Klezmers. He learned to play the fiddle at a young age and later switched to cello. Stutschewsky studied in Leipzig with Julius Klengel and embarked on a richly varied musical career. Among other things, he was member of the legendary Vienna String Quartet headed by Rudolf Kolisch. In 1938 he settled in Eretz Israel. The selection of pieces presented in this CD includes most of his compositions for cello and piano. They are all written in the Hassidic style and were created between 1924 (in Europe) and 1964 (in Israel).
