Film Screening at Beit Hatfutsot draws new crowds
Former secret service officials, businessmen, Board members and friends came to Beit Hatfutsot to pay respects to Leon Charney and watch a special screening of the documentary “Back Door Channels: The Price of Peace”.
Leon Charney is a Jewish American businessman, political advisor, author, philanthropist, media personality, and cantor. He is remembered as the key player in the negotiations prior to the signing of the 1979 Camp David Peace Accord and Treaty between Israel and Egypt.
Prior to the screening of the documentary, the nearly 200 guests heard commentaries on the importance of the work behind the scenes – by Dr. Ronen Bergman, writer and senior correspondent in leading Israeli and international media.
The documentary “Back Door Channels”, directed by Harry Hunkele, is the story of the men who brought the first lasting peace to the Middle East. Leon Charney was one of them. For the first time ever, the filmmakers take the audience behind the public veil and reveal the backroom corridors of power during one of the world’s greatest historical moments. Charney is considered by many to be the “back door channel” that enabled the Camp David peace to materialize.
The Treaty between Israel and Egypt was an historic event for both countries as were the negotiations which preceded it. This was no doubt one of the most important periods in Leon Charney’s life and career.
Dan Tadmor, CEO of Beit Hatfutsot thanked Mr. and Mrs. Charney for honoring the Museum with their presence, emphasizing how significant and crucial Charney’s work end efforts were for the peace process.
