Special Beit Hatfutsot Exhibition at the Knesset
Beit Hatfutsot recently had the honor of being invited by the Knesset (Israeli Parliament) to present a preview display of the upcoming original exhibition “Operation Moses: 30 Years After”.
On Monday, December 7th, 2015, the Knesset Aliyah and Absorption Committee held a unique session marking 30 years of the immigration of Ethiopian Jewry to Israel. Leaders from the community and distinguished guests were invited to partake in this session. Amongst the numerous Members of the Knesset and guest speakers, Dan Tadmor, CEO of Beit Hatfutsot was invited to give an address on the exhibition and Beit Hatfutsot’s leading theme, “You are Part of the Story”.
The centrally located display included posters depicting nine individuals whose personal stories are revealed in the exhibition. Each poster displayed a photo taken at the time of their immigration together with a current photo, and a narrative incorporating the curatorial concept of “then and now”.
Alongside the display the Museum offered Knesset members and guests the opportunity to research their own family’s story. Two modular stations with computers were connected to Beit Hatfutsot’s vast databases that include over 1000 records of Ethiopian names and meanings, as well as photos and 15,000 family trees of members of this community.
During the day numerous visitors viewed the display, commenting and making inquiries. Several recognized family members from the posters, while others traced their roots via Beit Hatfutsot’s rich database.
Beit Hatfutsot was warmly acknowledged by MK Dr. Avraham Neguise, Chairperson of the Committee.
