Overview
This exhibition is an inspiring discussion of Jewish identity, from the ethnic, religious and cultural aspects. The two figures in Bokobza's painting are rooted in the realms of agriculture and myth. The woman holding a sheath of wheat brings to mind Demeter or Gaia , goddess of earth and fertility, while the young shepherd carries a lamb. The abundance associated with the harvest is indicated by a mound of fruit on the woman's hat – the most conspicuous detail in the painting. The absurd hat is related to stereotypical and sexist representations of Oriental or "exotic" women. In 1940s Hollywood, similar fruit-topped hats were used to shape the image of the Brazilian star Carmen Miranda as an exotic figure carrying a promise of sexual pleasure.
